Ryan Barry is an American jazz saxophonist, composer, and multi-instrumentalist whose music blends modern jazz language with a lyrical, contemporary voice. Drawn to improvisation from an early age, he discovered his passion for jazz while performing in his university big band, setting the course for a career centered on composition, collaboration, and
artistic exploration.
Since 2020, Barry has studied with acclaimed saxophonist Mike Tucker, recognized for his work at Berklee College of Music and alongside trumpeter Arturo Sandoval. In 2021, Barry immersed himself in New York City’s jazz community, deepening his craft through jam sessions, performances, and regular engagement with the city’s creative music scene.
Following the release of his debut single in 2020, Barry signed with G2 Records & Publishing and released his debut EP, Counterpoint, in 2021. His 2022 bossa nova interpretation of “I Love How You Love Me” was featured on Spotify’s official All New Jazz playlist and has since surpassed 110,000 streams across digital platforms.
After stepping away from the studio for three years to deepen his jazz studies and further develop his artistic voice, Barry returned in 2025 with A Very Barry Christmas, a holiday collection inspired by the Swing Era while incorporating hard bop and bebop influences associated with Sonny Stitt, Oscar Peterson, and Dexter Gordon. The project also carries subtle nods to Vince Guaraldi’s A Charlie Brown Christmas.
In 2026, Barry returned to Grand Street Recording Studio with a new quintet to record If I Did Not Speak Out. Exploring themes of love, loss, reflection, and social conscience, the project marks a continued step forward in his development as a composer, improviser, and bandleader.
If I Did Not Speak Out captures Ryan Barry in a moment of artistic definition, bringing lyrical tenor playing, original composition, and a close-working quintet into a concise statement of warmth, reflection, and conviction.
Recorded at Grand Street Recording Studio in New York City and mixed by Chris Sulit of Trading 8s Recording Studio, the album pairs thoughtfully reimagined standards with expressive originals, allowing Barry’s melodic voice to unfold through ensemble conversation, emotional clarity, and a growing sense of purpose.
The recording features Barry on tenor saxophone with Jacob Melsha on trombone, Charles Colizza on electric guitar, Chris Smith on upright bass, and Matty Grattan on drums. Smith and Grattan bring the familiarity of a long-running musical partnership with Barry, grounding the album with a rhythm section that is responsive, swinging, and deeply connected to the ensemble’s phrasing. Melsha adds a warm brass countervoice that expands the group’s melodic language, while Colizza’s guitar gives the quintet a supple harmonic color that keeps the music open and contemporary.
